Bishop emeritus Teunis Johannes Horstmann passes away

Bishop emeritus Teunis Johannes Horstmann passed away at the age of 87 in Alkmaar, the Netherlands, on 12 August 2014. He was Bishop of Haarlem from December 1987 to October 1994.

Teun Horstmann was born in Utrecht in 1927 and grew up there. In 1945 he began studying theology at the Old Catholic Seminary in Amersfoort. He was ordained as a priest in 1951. From 1953 to 1987 he served in various parishes in both dioceses of the Old Catholic Church of the Netherlands. Thanks to his direct manner, he was highly popular among the members of his parishes.

Teun Horstmann was elected as the Bishop of Haarlem on 1 October 1987. He stepped down in 1994 after being diagnosed with cancer, but his characteristic figure and personality remained with the church for another 20 years. During that time he performed a wide range of duties.

The Old Catholic Church of the Netherlands and the bishops of the Union of Utrecht remember Bishop emeritus Horstmann with gratitude. May he rest in peace.
